Staff Accountant (Finance)



Job Description Summary

Responsible for supporting the Controller in maintaining the General Ledger, Balance Sheet accounts and Accounting controls. Additionally, the Staff Accountant is responsible for supporting other areas in the Accounting office, including payroll, income audit, accounts payable, and general cashiering, and ensuring all functions are being performed accurately, on a timely basis and according to hotel policies and procedures.

Job Description

  • Perform or assist in the performance of month-end closing. Review general ledger entries, verify trial balances, update commentaries, run financial statements and prepare reports for management review.
  • Ensure all balance sheet accounts and bank accounts are reconciled on monthly basis, and submit those reconciliations for approval by the Director of Finance.
  • Assist in accounting for moneys received and dispersed including accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, audit, general ledger reporting, and cash handling functions for the hotel.
  • Prepare sales tax reconciliations, reports and investigation as needed. Maintain necessary records and backup documents required to balance taxes.
  • Implement and maintain procedures and systems in accordance with company's required financial controls and generally accepted accounting practices; maintain documents for audits of hotel accounts; ensure compliance with government regulations, federal, state and local laws. M onitors procedures to ensure compliance.
  • Prepare third-party allocation billings and other required non-guest billings.
  • Assist in the preparation and reporting of budgets and financial forecasts.
  • Independently maintain required accounting records and logs, process daily paperwork and resolve discrepancies.
  • Assist with the distribution of financial information as a management tool for operating departments.
  • Assist in the day-to-day operations and assignments of the Accounting staff.
  • Promote teamwork and quality service through daily communication and coordination with other departments.
  • Respond quickly to guest requests in a friendly manner. Follow up to ensure guest satisfaction.
  • Interact with outside contacts:
    • Guests - to provide service, send bills and collect payment
    • Vendors - to pay bills or discuss pricing or billing issues; to ensure proof of insurance
    • Corporate office Accounting management and staff - ongoing
    • Regulatory agencies - regarding compliance matters
    • Other contacts as needed (Professional organizations, community groups)
  • May process payroll or verify payroll postings and reports in a centralized environment.
  • May review and authorize purchase requests as needed in the absence of the Director of Finance.
  • Attend departmental meetings.
  • Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned. The employee is expected to work in other areas of the hotel when needed to assist operations to perform job duties not necessarily contained in this job description.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or equivalent and 2+ years in hotel accounting on a similar position or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience. Must speak fluent English.

This job requires ability to perform the following:

  • Carrying or lifting items weighing up to 25 pounds
  • Communicating with other people

Other:
  • Mathematical skills, including basic arithmetic and algebra, profit/loss concepts, percentages, and variances are utilized frequently.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Must be able to devise, prepare and maintain spreadsheets using various software systems, and must have knowledge of computerized financial reporting systems. Knowledge of Microsoft Office is preferred. Knowledge of Opera and Micros POS systems is desired.
  • Problem solving, reasoning, motivating, organizational and training abilities are used often.
  • Reading abilities are used often in reviewing financial analyses, budgets, and other related reports. Writing abilities are used in compiling these financial reports, as well as to document.
  • May be required to work nights, weekends, and/or holidays.
