Job Title: I ntellectual Property and Commercial Counsel

Reports to: VP, Deputy General Counsel

Location: Portland, OR (Hybrid)

The Role

As the IP and Commercial Counsel, you will play a pivotal role on the Legal Team, driving company-wide initiatives through your legal expertise, with a focus on intellectual property and general commercial matters. You will implement strategic approaches to support innovation and collaborate closely with business partners across Deckers' brands. Your ability to manage conflicting priorities through efficient time management, excellent internal communication, and a positive team player attitude will be key to your success.

Your Impact

  • Manage outside counsel regarding global IP portfolio (clearance, prosecution, maintenance, and enforcement) ensuring budget adherence and appropriate legal advice for business needs.
  • Oversee day-to-day design/utility patent and enforcement efforts, including IP litigation.
  • Handle day-to-day brand protection efforts in the U.S.
  • Advise internal clients and serve as the owner of global IP advice, delivering legal excellence in copyright, trademark, design & utility patent legal issues and strategy.
  • Lead and manage cross-functional projects and provide legal support for global intellectual property and other substantive projects.
  • Advise business teams on structure and strategy development, negotiating, drafting, and finalizing various types of contracts including collaboration and endorsement agreements.
  • Support integration of IP practices in Deckers culture through trainings and meetings with brand teams.
  • Develop and support the substantive work of paralegals on the team.
  • Cultivate a working knowledge of the Company's organization, policies, procedures, practices, and personnel to identify issues and provide recommendations.
  • Collaborate with EMEA and APAC legal teams on global legal projects to develop IP centers of excellence for standard legal processes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and complete special projects as requested.

Who You Are

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Minimum of 3-6 years of experience in IP law and commercial transactions.
  • Strong knowledge of IP laws and regulations.
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Collaborative and team-oriented mindset.
  • High degree of professionalism, integrity, and strong work ethic.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive matters appropriately.
  • Experience working effectively in complex global organizations.
