Machining Department Supervisor (Project Management)



Position:                    Machining Department Supervisor

Location:                    Waunakee, WI

Hours:                        1st Shift

Reports to:                 Assembly Manager or Director of Operations

Direct Reports:          Machining Leads and Machinists  

Summary:  The Machining Department Supervisor is responsible for all employees and processes within the Machining Department on all shifts. The Machining Supervisor is measured by several KPI's, including but not limited to safety, people (turnover), quality, cost (efficiency and expenses), and on time delivery.  The Machining Supervisor is responsible for the efficient and quality manufacturing of NORD component parts using approved NORD machining methods and instructions in a safe, clean, and well-organized work environment (5S).  The Machining Supervisor is responsible for maintaining proper product flow through the machining department and meeting the department's customer's (both external and internal) needs. This person must be a customer focused supervisor that promotes short delivery times, flexibility, and responsiveness. The Machining Supervisor is responsible for identifying waste, problems with product flow, or other problems within the process and solving these problems using lean techniques – creating an environment of continuous improvement. The Machining Supervisor is responsible for maintaining adequate staffing in the department, proper tools, and proper equipment necessary to meet all objectives.  Working closely with the Materials Management group and Customer Logistics, the Machining Supervisor is responsible for maintaining a high percentage of on-time order shipments.  The Machining Supervisor is responsible for developing and maintaining reports for all aspects of the Machining Department. The Machining Supervisor is responsible for creating a motivated workforce and a climate of inclusiveness.  The Machining Supervisor is responsible for enforcing all company policies, procedures, and practices.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Hiring, managing, and developing employees. Supervise employees assigned to the Machining department. Active in the hiring process, working with HR to screen, interview, and on-board new employees. Conduct employee performance appraisals, administer company policies, and carry out employee coaching, counseling, and discipline.
  • Daily machine shop scheduling and planning for all shifts (1st, 2nd, & weekend). Create production order packets, schedule the work for the machines, communicate schedule and priorities to machinists. 
  • Develop, maintain and update: routings, pricing, work orders, scheduling tools, capacity planning reports, CNC programs, quality reports and efficiency reports (workflows).
  • Monitor machining related ECN (Engineering Change Notifications) and communicate changes to the employees in machining, oversee the changes take place for the machine shop.
  • Support machining tasks/projects/questions from other departments for tooling, fixturing, reworks, drawings, machining capabilities, etc.                   
  • Ensure proper training and development of employees assigned to department using Job Instructions (JI).           
  • Attend improvement walks.
  • Submit IT tickets, maintenance tickets, and write purchase requisitions for the department.
  • Conduct daily accountability meetings with machinists. Provide communication and resolve problems within the department using the employee's input and help.   
  • Facilitate kaizen board meetings and close action items to improve the department.
  • Participate in safety & cleanliness (5S) inspections. Participate and contribute to safety committee.
  • Quality issue analysis (root cause - 5 Why).  Participate and contribute to the quality meeting and quality teams.
  • Strategic planning for Machining. Includes annual budget development, establishment of annual department goals and objectives, staffing requirements, and capacity needs. Maintaining and procuring all required assets for department to achieve goals.
  • Completion of all standard work procedures.
  • Facilitate raw material deliveries (steel) and coordinate material certification process.
  • Be an active participant in the company's suggestion, quality, efficiency, and cost-saving programs.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma required.  Two year technical degree preferred.  4 year college degree a plus.
  • Experience: 5 years experience supervising or managing a machining department in a related environment.
  • Skills and Key Attributes: Excellent organizational and planning skills. Programming, turning and milling skills with excellent print reading capabilities (GD&T understanding).  Ability to lead subordinates and coordinate activities with peers. Common sense & proven decision-making skills. Must be customer focused, both internal customers and external customers.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift parts up to 50lbs. Ability to stand for up to 10 hours a day.
