The Substance Use Navigator also referred as Behavioral Health Navigator (BHN) is integral to supporting medication for addiction treatment (MAT) in the acute care setting.

The Behavioral Health Navigator (BHN) is a care coordinator and an integral team member of a statewide initiative to improve access to MAT (medication for addiction treatment) Navigators conduct initial brief assessments, interface with the physician and nursing teams and introduce patients to MAT programs and services. This involves expediting appointments at MAT-capable clinics, serving as the primary coach for their clients, and maintaining ongoing contact with their panel over time and via monthly reporting. The BHN may interact with patients in the Emergency Department setting, Primary Care outpatient setting or in any area of the hospital where a patient may either be identified or self -disclose a need for Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT). The BHN also assists with access to other services such as financial counseling, primary care, mental health services, social services, and residential treatment facilities as well as homeless shelters, access and linkage to care for presenting problems associated with addiction, homelessness and food insecurity. The BHN documents their patient interactions, provide reports to the grant funding agency and tracks recidivism for reporting purposes.
