Automation/Controls Engineer (Engineering)

Automation/Controls Engineer to quote, design, program and troubleshoot automation control packages. Prepare system documentation in the form of operator's manuals and electrical schematics.  Must be able to work with various PLC, HMI and motion control platforms.  Experience with Machine Vision a plus.  Minimal travel required.

Essential Functions

  • Automating existing processes thru the use of traditional robotics and collaborative robot approaches
  • Stay abreast of the latest technology and automation environments through continuous research and identify those needed to meet engineering strategies/goals
  • Support the standardization of all mechanical and controls hardware components to provide the best performance for the application in a cost-effective manner
  • Review PLC logic & debug for proper content, error-proofing, and data collection function
  • Review and approve electrical and controls schematics and assembly system BOMs
  • Collaborate with local and enterprise equipment teams to identify areas of opportunity and support capital equipment procurement
  • Develop equipment and process specifications
  • Manage equipment/technology projects including project schedule and budget
  • Assist in the design of new equipment, participate in vendor / internal reviews and assist with set-up and training on new equipment (maintenance and operator).
  • Review and modify as necessary all equipment PMs and critical spares lists
  • Interface with equipment vendor(s) to ensure system design, build, runoff and installation
  • Lead in root cause investigations and eliminate downtime issues.
  • Participate in lean plant floor layout (value-add, error-proof, visual factory, Kan Ban material flow)
  • Lead in continuous improvement focused on controls and automation.
  • Support problem solving activities (7Step, Error-Proofing, Histogram, Fishbone, 5 Why)
  • Support quality functions as necessary
  • Lead and support continuous improvement programs and employee involvement work teams
  • Participate in CI programs and cost savings initiatives such as VA/VE, MCM, other
  • Improve documentation on plant electrical grid and recommend any necessary upgrades.
  • Maintain and promote a clean, safe, and organized work environment
  • Support quality functions as necessary

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • An Associate's Degree in Electrical with 5 plus years' experience may be considered in lieu of a Bachelor's Degree.
  • 3-5 years controls and/or automation experience and experience with handling automation projects from start to finish
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment is preferred
  • Control panel engineering, PLC programming, HMI application development, and site start-up support of automated systems
  • Experience with safety equipment (safety mats light curtain e-stop circuits)
  • Experience with Industrial Vision Systems is preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required
  • Must have a positive and “can do” attitude
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project), ACAD, VisView, or other
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to multi-task effectively
  • Able to support extended hours when needed (including weekends), multiple shifts, and minimal travel as required
  • Experience with NFPA70 National Electric Code
