Specific Responsibilities
Operational
Plan, direct and coordinate all activities within the analytical department; including but not limited to ICP, AS, Gravimetric, cyanide, LECO, FQS and the weighing room;
Perform and provide training for data approval;
Perform and Manage the maintenance and repair of all equipment for technical problems and ensures accurate record keeping is maintained;
Ensure the department is suitably equipped, staffed and operates in an efficient, effective and profitable manner;
Maintain the storage and timely disposal of digested samples;
Implement on-going training programs for department staff to ensure technical and leadership skills are enhanced in order to effectively respond to new analytical techniques and time critical requests;
Proactively review, prepare, and develop all SOPs for new or revised analytical methods;
Review and approve timesheets and overtime using Dayforce, schedule vacation and shift assignments;
Evaluate productivity metrics and prepare weekly reports;
Participate in regular lab safety, technical and operation meetings;
Conduct regular crew talks with staff to discuss department issues or updates on quality, safety and production;
Perform Treasure Hunts as required;
Prepares and managers department work schedules;
Manage and maintain inventory within the department;
Other duties as assigned.
Quality Assurance
Ensure departmental compliance to Quality requirements, policies and procedures;
Ensure analytical data quality produced in department meets or exceeds acceptable company and market standards;
Ensure laboratory equipment and procedures are of the standard required to meet or exceed quality control targets;
Participate in, assess the results of QA/QC audits and implement improvements and corrective action as required;
Conduct investigation for quality incidents, establish root cause and implement corrective actions;
Manage quality training in department and ISO documents;
Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality.
Lead and manage the prep and fire assay quality meetings.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Extensive knowledge of analytical chemistry including ICP-AA & AES
Excellent command of the English language, both verbal and written communication skills;
Proven leadership and interpersonal skills;
Demonstrated judgment, creativity, integrity and ability to problem solve;
Strong safety and quality service attitude and approach to work;
Excellent computer skills including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suites;
Ability to effectively handle escalations, time critical issues, and work under pressure with strict deadlines;
Detail-oriented, results-focused, and strong organization skills.
Required Qualifications
Post-secondary Degree in Chemistry (or relevant Science field) from an accredited educational institution;
Minimum 5 years of analytical laboratory experience;
Minimum 3 years of management or supervisory experience.
