California American Water is seeking a passionate enviornmental professional to join our team in Sacramento, CA. As a Sr. Water Quality & Environmental Specialist with us, you will be responsible for quality control and assurance requirements and making sure we are adhering to regulatory standards pertaining to drinking water and hazardous waste. Our ideal candidate will be adaptable and able to thrive in a fast-paced, detail-oriented work environment.

Position Details

The base salary range represents a good faith salary range for this position. This position is eligible for annual incentive pay and has the opportunity for continued salary growth. If you are hired at American Water your base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as market, geography, skills, education and/or experience. Position Range: $62,700 - $104,775

Primary Role

Responsible for organizing advanced functions and activities related to environmental management and water quality for assigned facilities. Coordinates the day-to- day collection of water quality samples. Administers programs to ensure compliance with all water quality and environmental regulations including drinking water standards, hazardous material and waste management, air resources, and water waste discharges. Assists in resolving water treatment issues. Investigates water quality complaints and determines course of action needed.

Key Accountabilities

  • Manage monitoring and reporting programs to ensure compliance with federal and state water quality and environmental regulations and company standards for assigned facilities.
  • Conduct advanced sampling and/or analysis and special projects.
  • Obtain, prepare, file, and maintain all regulatory reports and records.
  • Manage required permits and make any necessary modifications and renewals.
  • Participate in internal and external audits and represent American Water with regulators and customers.
  • Identify potential issues and problems and initiate responsive actions and mitigate environmental violations.
  • Supervise, monitor, and calibrate analyzers/equipment, etc. to ensure established standards of performance and accuracy are maintained.
  • Conduct advanced projects and prepare reports as needed.
  • Investigate and respond to escalated water quality complaints or concerns.
  • Responsible for planning, preparing, and controlling the portion of the financial plan relating to responsibilities.

Knowledge/Skills

  • Knowledge of chemistry and laboratory technique and QA/QC programs.
  • Knowledge of federal and state environmental standards and regulations and understanding of current environmental legislation and regulations.
  • Regulatory knowledge of proper lab analytical testing methods.
  • Thorough processing skills and good working knowledge of computer programs, databases, and software to support specific assignments.
  • Must understand principles of water and/or wastewater treatment and be able to troubleshoot systems.
  • Process, project, and program management skills; quantitative skills (e.g., analytical, technical, problem solving); effective people management (e.g., planning, organizing, controlling, and leading teams); written and verbal communications (e.g., fluency in report writing and presentations); interpersonal skills (e.g., persuasion, negotiation, listening, cooperation, tact, diplomacy, problem solving, internal consulting).

Experience/Education

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science or engineering, Biology, or related field.
  • A minimum of five (5) years' experience in water, wastewater, and laboratory operations.
  • Experience in administering hazardous waste, hazardous materials, air resources, or water waste discharge programs is highly desirable

  • Full-time
  • Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm
