Assistant Section Chief Lab (Healthcare)



Job Summary

Performs laboratory tests for clinical diagnosis adhering to guidelines of licensing and regulatory agencies.

Job Specific Duties

  • Performs and reports laboratory tests accurately in required time. Recognize and report critical values to appropriate personnel. 
  • Performs quality control/improvement processes, recognize factors that affect measurements and results. 
  • Take appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision. Maintains required records according to the guidelines of licensing and regulatory agencies. 
  • Ensures results of controls are reviewed and plotted or entered into the Laboratory computer system or quality control logs daily as well as printed, if indicated. 
  • Ensures staff is maintaining logs of all preventative maintenance and remedial action for each piece of equipment. 
  • Works with Leader in generating and analyzing turnaround time data. 
  • Performs scheduled preventative maintenance and calibrations on instruments and equipment. Maintains cleanliness of instruments, equipment, and area. 
  • Ensures staff is performing scheduled preventative maintenance.
  • Follows established procedures and evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens analysis. 
  • Order and monitor levels of inventory and prevents stock-outs. Maintain adequate supplies at all times. 
  • Participates in scheduling to assure adequate numbers of staff to complete workload. 
  • Complies with hospital and laboratory safety regulations and adheres to HIPAA guidelines. 
  • Maintains cleanliness of equipment and area; perform daily section audits. 

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Associate's Degree Related field   
  • MT - Medical Tech Active State of Florida Medical Technologist
  • 2-4 years Medical Technologist experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Provides coverage on assigned rotating weekends as part of lab team.
  • Bachelor's degree in related field preferred.
  • Prior experience in the field of Medical Technology and assist with supervision.
  • Ability to communicate promptly, clearly, and courteously, both verbally and writing.
  • Ability to interpret and analyze information to perform laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to use computer to enter, access data, & accurately relay test results to appropriate person.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform laboratory techniques and use laboratory instruments.
  • Work cooperatively and constructively with physicians, patients, families, and co-workers.
  • Ability to problem solve and adapt standard clinical procedures to the individual client's need.
  • Ability to interpret, adapts, and reacts calmly under stressful conditions.
  • Maintains positive interpersonal communication with physicians/patient/client/coworker.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of all regulatory agencies requirements.
