The Instructor, Commuter Rail Transportation prepares and delivers technical training and instruction for employees that are directly connected to the movement of Commuter Rail Vehicles, in accordance with established Commuter Rail practices and safety standards. Develops and maintains a quality assurance program for Commuter Rail Transportation training, including continuation and developmental courses, to address training needs as defined by management. This is a safety-sensitive position and is subject to the provisions of the RTD Drug and Alcohol Policy.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts and develops new employee training and certification programs.
  • Designs, reviews, and conducts specialized training courses on special activities related to the alignment and addressing specific development concerns.
  • Facilitates courses to meet needs, assesses success of training, and recommends modifications as needed.
  • Schedules work assignments, shifts, and training classes and maintains accurate training reports and logs.
  • Develops and maintains standards and procedures to ensure the safe operation of Commuter Rail vehicles and integrates training and quality assurance procedures into the Commuter Rail Transportation culture.
  • Prepares troubleshooting and operating procedures for Engineers and Conductors.
  • Coordinates, develops, revises, and administers qualifications, certifications, and re-certification testing of current and potential employees.
  • May facilitate training on Commuter Rail Vehicles within the railroad right of way.
  • Performs all other job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience as a full-time Train Engineer/Conductor, Train Operator or Controller/Dispatcher or any combination of Train Engineer/Conductor, Controller/Dispatcher or Train Operator. Certified Engineer or Train Operator is preferred.
  • A minimum of one (1) year Supervisor experience.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience developing and facilitating training classes is preferred. 
  • Valid Colorado Driver's License, or ability to obtain one within 30-days of hire.  No DUI, DWI or reckless driving in the past five (5) years.
  • Must obtain and maintain an FRA Designated Supervisor of Locomotive Engineers (DSLE) status within 90 days of hire.
  • Must obtain and maintain certification as a Train Engineer/Conductor and Dispatcher.
  • Must obtain CRT Field Supervisor Certification.
  • Must obtain CRT Division Supervisor Certification.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency in Commuter Rail operations and procedures.
  • Ability to pass a triennial FRA medical exam.
  • Ability to maintain a high-performance level including dependability, reliability, and safety.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through verbal and written means.
  • Ability to use sound judgment.
  • Ability to manage time and workload effectively, which includes planning, organizing, and prioritizing with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work various shifts and locations, as assigned.

OR:

  • An equivalent combination of experience, knowledge, skills and abilities.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The work environment and physical demands described here are representative of those required by an employee to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.

  • Demonstrated physical ability to perform job duties to include throwing rail switches, accessing and operating Electric Multiple Unit (EMU), operating evacuation ladder, coupling/uncoupling EMU, and raising/lowering a pantograph.
  • Demonstrated ability to push/pull up to 125 pounds and lift/carry up to 60 pounds without assistance.
  • Ability to walk on track ballast, on uneven ground, sit for an extended period of time, and work in various outdoor weather.

Pay Range:

$65,177.00 - $92,062.25 Annual
