Primary Purpose:
Using established policies and procedures; the Certified Coder translates narrative descriptions of diseases, injuries, and medical procedures into numeric or alphanumeric codes needed for billing. The Certified Coder may code all types of inpatient, observation and outpatient cases (to include clinics, ancillary services, and ambulatory surgery, series, and emergency room cases) and may be called upon to code highly complex inpatient records (to include trauma, burns, open heart and transplant cases) based on experience and skill set.
Knowledge and Skills
Education: High School Diploma or GED. minimum required. Formal education in basic ICD-9CM/CPT coding, Medical Terminology, Anatomy/, pathophysiology and disease processes - minimum required. Associate or Bachelor degree in healthcare related field, preferred.
Years of Experience: 1-2 years equivalent experience.
Required Skills and Knowledge: Excellent keyboarding skills required to enter medical codes. Trained and competent in ICD-9 CM/CPT and ICD-10 CM/CPT Coding. Technically competent to code complex outpatient, endoscopies, cardiac catherizations. Technically competent to code all inpatient cases including the most complex-open hearts, burns, transplants, major trauma. Technically competent to code outpatient cases with simple diagnoses or procedures (sutures, foley catheters, clinic procedures, transfusions, etc).
License and Certifications: Certified Coders are required to be certified in one of the following: Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC).
