Department Manager, Aviation

Overview

Urban Engineers, Inc. is seeking a Department Manager, Aviation, to provide strategic leadership, technical expertise, and managerial direction for our growing aviation practice. This high-impact role is focused on the delivery of services to our clients and will oversee multidisciplinary teams, ensuring responsive service, operational excellence, and delivery of outstanding engineering solutions for airport and aviation clients across the US.

Key Responsibilities

Department Leadership & Staff Development

  • Provide direction to project managers, engineers, and aviation technical staff.
  • Develop staff through training, guidance, mentorship, and performance management; conduct performance reviews to ensure professional growth and utilization goals.
  • Lead recruitment and retention efforts in alignment with business plan staffing goals.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performance team culture while supporting career development pathways for emerging professionals through the progression and diversity of project assignments and professional development opportunities.

Project & Technical Management
  • Oversee and guide aviation design projects.
  • Serve as a senior technical resource, applying engineering expertise to review, approve, and seal project deliverables.
  • Ensure quality assurance and compliance with Urban's standards, safety protocols, and agency design requirements.
  • Enhance relationships with current clients and teaming consultants, while engaging new potential partnerships.

Operations Management
  • Maintain workload forecasts, coordinate team assignments, and operational targets for project financial performance.
  • Oversee project financials, performance metrics, and operational efficiency initiatives.
  • Assist in developing annual operational goals for the aviation department aligned with Business Unit and corporate strategies.
  • Develop strong relationships with Teaming partners.
  • Identify market opportunities, mitigate risks, and implement initiatives to enhance quality and client impact.
  • Stay abreast of national and regional aviation industry trends to maintain technical excellence within the team.
  • Represent the firm at industry events, conferences, and in public relations and technical journals.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Civil, or Architectural Engineering from an accredited program required.
  • Licensure: Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Experience: Minimum of 10-15 years of progressive experience in aviation or transportation engineering, with at least 5 years in management roles overseeing multidisciplinary teams and complex aviation infrastructure projects.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong background in airfield and airport facility design, construction documents, and quality control standards.
  • Leadership Skills: Demonstrated excellence in staff management, mentorship, and leadership of high-performing teams.
  • Communication: Excellent oral and written communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively influence, lead, and manage change across multiple stakeholders.
  • Technical Tools: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); familiarity with project management, CRM, and financial systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing complex airport improvement projects.
  • Strong network with municipal, state, and federal aviation agencies.
  • Experience in strategic recruitment and development of technical staff.
  • Active involvement in professional and design associations within the aviation sector.
